Small fix-it jobs around the house definitely go according to plan when I do the work and the Mister passes the pencil/hammer/hook or whatever it is we’re fixing.

Early morning
January 20th, 2009 — What I've been doing
5.30am and we’re up watching the inauguration of Barack Obama. Well at the moment it’s a bunch of New Zealanders trying to run a CNN-style panel discussion. Man the Mall is so full of people and it’s -6 degrees!
A visit from Mr Fixit
January 6th, 2009 — What I've been doing
A Mr Fixit guy came to visit to look at the broken draws and useless arrangement of built-in units in our wardrobe. He asked if we were “into sanding and painting at all?” Errr, no. He said he “assumed as much.” What!? Quite funny really that a guy can tell that within 5 minutes of meeting us, but so true. When it came to receiving his ideas for a new unit for the wardrobe he said “Where should I post it? Please don’t ask me to use email, I don’t do email.” So I took the chance to say that I “assumed as much.”!!
Scone picnic
December 21st, 2008 — What I've been doing
First Sunday without our beloved Nikau. However we’re reasonably distracted by work – why release software *just* before Christmas – and a visit from Basel Lisa! She was making an appearance in Wellington city for one day only, heard I was making date scones and coffee and came on over for a lovely 3 hour catch-up. We enjoyed scones and coffee (she said it was the best she’d had in aaaaages) on the floor in the struggling sun and almost forgot that we hadn’t been to Nikau. So great to see Lisa – perhaps in Basel next time!
In full flower!
December 11th, 2008 — What I've been doing
Marigold is now totally recognisable as a marigold, with several flowers! Still none of the other seeds in the pot have come through but this plant has practically taken over the whole pot anyway! It’s a lovely burst of orange every time I look out onto the deck.

Tiny plant
November 8th, 2008 — What I've been doing
Well, we’ve gone from seedling to tiny plant … still only 1 though! And look at it this morning – it wants to have a flower already!!! Must be very advanced for it’s age because it doesn’t have others to compete with!

Seedling
October 9th, 2008 — Random thoughts, What I've been doing
Planted some marigold seeds in one of the empty pots on our apartment anniversary last month. According to the picture on the back of the seed packet there should’ve been more activity much earlier on but 30 days on we’ve got one healthyish looking marigold seedling.
I planted way more seeds than that and I’m sure I didn’t plant them too deep or water them too much or too little – I think our weather is just too cold – although according, again, to the packet picture I planted them at the right time. Mind you these days, who can tell when spring is these days anyway.

I suppose it could be my fault that I didn’t use seedling mix in raised beds but I’m sure as kids we just planted seeds in the ground and stuff grew. Don’t say this funny old world of everyone allergic to peanuts and loosing concentration skills is spreading to soil nutrients. Sigh.
Out from under a rock
September 27th, 2008 — What I've been doing
I’m here, I’m here. My throat tickle became some kind of mild throat thing but due to the rigorous regime of Lemsip and vitamin C and water, I actually only ended up thick-headed and miserable for one morning. I just felt quite exhausted all week but still managed to work (kept away from the office because there’s nothing worse than sitting there with people coughing and blowing their noses around you), even though it was only at half speed. Am almost 100% again now.
We were on tv!
September 23rd, 2008 — What I've been doing
Well the backs of our heads were. We went to the filming of the TVNZ 7 debate between politicians on ICT issues in the lead up to the election last night. All very grown up indeed! I followed most of it and the debaters were quite funny – esp Rodney Hide, Maurice Williamson and David Cunliffe – they’d all done their research and dug up stories to support their views on broadband, access, Cook Straight cable, data privacy etc.
It was hell of a fun seeing how a TV programme is made too! There were ancient old CRT boxes around the place showing what was running live and you could see in the studio all the different cameras filming at once with the one with the red light being the one broadcast live. When they did a wide shot you could see the back of my hair – Mother spotted it too! It was quite bronzy looking. Whenever there were ad breaks women came scurrying from the wings with little baskets of make-up and any shine powder puffs and drinks of water. Just like the movies!
We weren’t allowed cellphones on at all in the studio but I managed to sneak this photo between the heads of the 2 people sitting in front of us.
Ahem
September 19th, 2008 — What I've been doing
Started with a tickle in my throat yesterday afternoon, now feeling quite a lump when I swallow … am downing Lemsip and vitamin C in the hope I don’t get a cold or flu or whatever it is that everyone else seems to have had this winter that we’ve so far avoided. Even stayed home from Gotham this morning and had honey on toast at home.
